Shifting Horizons

Shifting Horizons brings together artists whose practices confront the border as one of the long war’s most enduring technologies. From the US–Mexico border wall to Israeli occupation, from Indigenous land struggles to the policing of refugees and migrants worldwide, the exhibition examines how borders operate not simply as geographic boundaries, but as militarized systems that organize movement, belonging, dispossession, and death.

Through weaving, film, performance, installation, and visual art, the artists trace how migration is forced, surveilled, inherited, remembered, and resisted. Their works engage familial histories of displacement, land-based memory, refugee experience, colonial partition, and acts of return and reconnection. Together, they reveal how war reverberates across generations, landscapes, and intimate life, while also locating borderlands as sites of creative insurgency.

Against inherited divisions and militarized geographies, Shifting Horizons imagines other forms of relation: to land, kinship, memory, and freedom. The exhibition asks what becomes possible when artists refuse the horizons imposed by walls, checkpoints, prisons, and occupation. In their place, these works offer practices of dignity, care, movement, and belonging that insist on life beyond the violence of borders.
